Message from the Headteacher
Hardwick Primary School caters for children aged 4 – 11 years old, serving Hardwick Lane, Sicklesmere Road and the Nowton, Home Farm and Bury Park Estates. The School opened in 1969 and for nearly 50 years it has faithfully served the children and their families from the local community.
The school has grown in size over the years and has undergone further extension and improvements in 2015. It has two Early Years Foundation Stage classrooms linked to the outside learning area, three Key Stage 1 classrooms also linked to an outside learning area and six Key Stage 2 classrooms.
The school also hosts one of the three Local Authority specialist Speech and Language Communication Centres, which specialises in educating children with specific speech and language disorders. Along with a large hall, library, a large playground and Multi-Use Games Area (MUGA), an extensive field and wildlife area, our school is a great place to learn and play!
The Children’s Centre, including Southgate Pre-School is situated on the school site.
Our intake for each year group is set at 45 pupils and we currently have 291 pupils on roll.
We believe our school is a happy, “family school” with high expectations, is forward thinking and has a caring atmosphere and an exciting, challenging curriculum, but above all, a school that children really want to come to. We firmly believe working alongside our parents in partnership and parental involvement in the children’s education is actively encouraged.
We expect high standards in everything we do and we believe in educating the whole child. We feel strongly that children should have opportunities to develop a wide range of skills and interests beyond the school curriculum. For example in Year 3 the children take part in the PrimaySTEPS workshops, run by the Royal Ballet School, Year 4 children learn a musical instrument as part of the Whole School Ensemble Teaching programme and Year 5 go swimming every week. We also run two residential visits for Year 4 and Year 6, and all children take part in a school production once a year.
We have a very successful Gardening Club, who have been awarded ‘Gold’ for the past five years in the Bury in Bloom Green Fingers competition and our commitment to sports has lead to us being awarded the Silver Sports Mark. Our extensive range of clubs include: lunchtime sports for all children, Fighting Fit, gymnastics, dance, drama, science, art, singing, Saturday football, netball, Rock Solid and Wednesday Gang, to name but a few!
We have a strong, enthusiastic and committed staff team with a wide range of talents and a great deal of experience, dedicated Governors and Friends committee. Everyone works for the benefit of the school and to provide the best education for all our children. The school also has positive links with the local community.
We are proud to be a member of the Bury Schools Partnership. The partnership is a collective group of twenty schools in the Bury St Edmunds area comprising of primary, secondary and special schools whose aim is to ensure all of our pupils get the very best opportunities and education. As from September 2016, our school become a 2-tier primary school taking children to the end of Year 6. We work closely with our local 2-tier secondary schools and our children are invited to take part in a number of events and activities held at these schools.
If you are a new parent and thinking of sending your child to Hardwick Primary School, Suffolk County Council is responsible for all admissions to the school. Full details of Local Authority policy and procedures are set out on the Suffolk County Council website ‘applying for a primary school place for the 2018/2019 school year’. The link to this site can be found in the ‘Admissions’ section of the school website. EYFS children are offered a full time place in a Reception class at the beginning of the academic year in which they have their 5th birthday.
We hope that our website provides you with the all the information you require, including details of our curriculum, etc, though if you should have any questions or queries about anything to do with the school, our friendly office staff will be happy to help.
We firmly believe that there is no substitute for seeing the school at work. So, if you’d like to come and visit, along with your child, you’ll be very welcome.
Mr D Jones
